What Good Does a Mentor Do?
Many people consider how they can help the next generation with mentoring. There are so many wonderful things that a person can experience when they become a mentor to a youth, but what about the youth? How do they benefit from having a mentor?
Think of what benefits you might get from having a mentor – someone who walks beside you as you navigate life. Maybe you have had a mentor for becoming an entrepreneur? Maybe you’ve had a mentor for overcoming various challenges in life? Very similar wonderful things can be experienced when you become a mentor for a young person.
Think of the difference a coach makes to the player; think about what benefits a new employee when they have someone come alongside them to show them the ropes, to encourage them, to be a source of information.
That’s what a mentor can do for a youth.
Here are some of the benefits that youth can gain from having a mentor. Some of the most important ones include:
Role modeling: A mentor can serve as a positive role model for a young person, demonstrating how to overcome challenges and achieve success.
Guidance and support: A mentor can provide guidance and support to a young person, helping them navigate through difficult situations and making informed decisions.
Increased self-esteem: Having a mentor who believes in them and encourages them can help a young person develop a stronger sense of self-worth and confidence.
Access to new opportunities and ideas: Mentors can introduce young people to new experiences, activities, ideas, and networks, providing them with opportunities they may not have otherwise had.
Improved academic performance: Research has shown that students who have mentors are more likely to perform better academically and stay in school.
Better emotional and social skills: A mentor can help a young person develop better emotional and social skills, such as empathy, communication, and problem-solving.
Accountability: In the right relationship, with encouragement and support, bad habits can be overcome, and goals can be achieved with an accountability partner. Often it is difficult to become that transparent and honest, but if that can be achieved, lives can be changed.
Overall, having a mentor can be an incredibly positive and transformative experience for young people, helping them to reach their full potential and achieve their goals.
